Can you play mahjong with 2 or 3 players?

Classic Chinese and Hong Kong mahjong is a four-seat game. House variants exist. Tilehaus keeps four chairs and fills empty ones with bots.

Play Mahjong

Animated how-to: win mahjong with four groups and a pair, tap a tile you do not need, throw it away, then take three of a kind or pass.
Watch once — it loops. The words underneath are if you want them.

Why four seats

The wall, the deal (13 tiles, dealer 14), and claim priority (hu, then pong/kong, then chow from the left) are built for four. Cutting seats changes whose discard you can chow and how fast the wall empties.

What Tilehaus does instead

Start a four-player table with one, two, or three humans. Enable bots for empty chairs. Bots only choose from legal actions the engine already computed — they do not see hidden racks they should not see.
